The Islamic or Hijri calendar, known as at-taqwīm al-hijrī ( التقويم الهجري‎ ) in Arabic, is a lunar calendar utilized by Muslims. Comprised of 12 months within a 354 or 355-day year, it serves as a tool for tracking events and observance of Islamic holidays.

Derived by the companions of the Prophet of Allah, Muhammad (PBUH), the Hijri calendar is anchored in the historic migration of the Prophet (PBUH) from Makkah to Medina, known as The Hijra. Its nomenclature and inception point are a direct reflection of this pivotal event. Understanding and following the Hijri dates hold significance for adherents of Islam.
